Review: Sex Criminals (Image Comics)

A “sex criminal”? How can something so good… be so… bad? Well spoiler alert…. it’s not bad, its GREAT! The below review of the first 5 volumes of the very mature adult comic, with a 6th is said to be coming in September.

WARNING! Possible spoilers, adult sexual language, stupid adult puns, and other adult stuff no one under 18 should be looking at. So now, let’s begin…

First of all, I will say this book has shown me some amazing sex positions I have never seen or heard of before. So crazy that I’m not sure if they have actually been done before. Challenge? If you read the volume, you know what I mean. If you haven’t, you’re going to want to stop here and get to reading it!

It’s not just all about the sexy, there’s substance to this comic as well…

Suzie’s a normal girl with an extraordinary ability: when she has sex, she stops time. One night she meets Jon… who has the same gift. And so they do what any other sex-having, time-stopping, couple would do: they rob banks.

So who on God’s sexy earth could have come up with this crime filled, mysterious, funny, erotic, and did I say erotic… adventure comic?

Matt Fraction is a New York Times-best-selling donkus of Sex Criminals (winner of the 2014 Will Eisner Award for Best New Series and named TIME Magazine’s Best Comic of 2013), ODY-C, Casanova, and newly Adventureman. Under their company Milkfed Criminal Masterminds, Inc., Fraction and DeConnick are currently developing television for NBC/Universal.

Chip Zdarsky is an Eisner Award-winning comic book author, known for his work on Howard the Duck from Marvel Comics, KAPTARA for Image Comics, and Jughead for Archie Comics. Prior to his career in comics, launched by SEX CRIMINALS, Chip worked for the National Post as an illustrator and columnist, writing and illustrating a weekly advice column called Extremely Bad Advice.

As a graphic designer, I will say that I am in LOVE with the cover art. Just look at this line up of volumes!

Not only do the covers look great, there is a wonderful play on words with the volume names such as volume one “One Weird Trick”, volume two “Two Worlds One Cop”, volume three “Three the Hard Way”, volume four “Fourgy!”, and volume five “Five-Fingered Discount”. Another fun design detail is the back cover where each one says something different, like issue one says “You’ve been reading Sex Criminals: Suzie Down in the Quiet”, shame on you.” And also says “This book is dedicated to the brave men and women who love 2 fuck”. These are just some of the fun design details I love to see in comics and they change in every volume.

So now that we know the sexy details, let’s talk about the characters. I love that the main character is a woman. A woman who, as the comic back page says, is a brave woman who loves to fuck! We get to see a refreshing perspective of what it’s like to be a woman curious about her sexuality, oh, and also about her salacious use of her powers. Jon, her partner (in more ways than one), was so fun to read about. The various people he’s been with and what he calls his “special place”. But like I said, its not alllll about the sex. The way these characters are written, they feel so real. And how they wrote about Suzie, I was so surprised how on point these men who created the comic wrote her! There is a great balance of reality, humor, seriousness, and mysticism all wrapped up in a titillating and sexy book. Bravo to the boys for nailing her… personality.

If you pick up the volumes, you will see a lot of extra material, including photos of the REAL people that the main characters were based on! Photos of them were taken as some reference images. Reference photos with the clothes ON! You perv’s. 😛 There is a whole interview with them. Matt and Chip also have a few fun extra content dialog moments at the end of some of the volumes that are just purse comedy brilliance that I’m not even sure if they are real, but wouldn’t be surprised if they are.

As you can see, when you pick up the volumes, you are getting much more than the story, you are also getting Matt and Chip in extra girthy content.

With all this, I haven’t even gotten to my favorite part… the sub characters! I know what you are thinking… sub characters? Lindsay, you must be joking or how much did Matt and Chip pay you for this article? No, I am not joking, and no I am not getting paid by them, not even getting any penis shaped cookies out of this. I legit love the sub characters! As you can guess, Suzie and Jon are not the only ones with powers, and everyone’s powers are different AND of course sex related. How many different kinds of sex related powers can there be? Well, you’ll just have to use your imagination, or better yet! Just read the comic.

As you can tell, I am very much counting down the days till the next volume, which for some reason also includes a separate issue number 69? Thanks Wikipedia. I know why yet, but I can guess 😉
