Videos On Demand For The Week Of May 1, 2020

The Assistant
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 90%

Jane, played by Julia Garner, recently graduated from college, and what she thought was an amazing start on her way to becoming a producer, has placed her at the bottom rung of a disgusting, and sexually charged ladder in a degrading and abusive industry.

The assistant comes off as a much darker version of Swimming With Sharks. However, while that movie covered it from a verbally and physically abuse aspect, this covers the dark seedy site made more clear by the recent Me Too movement. This movie may trigger people, but the message, if done properly, will be important.

Dreamkatcher
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (Unknown at this Time)

Josh is rebelling from his new stepmother, played by Radha Mitchell, having never mentally recovered from the death of his birth mother. While at their remote country home, his behavior reaches a new level, when Josh steals an evil talisman from a neighbor. His actions put himself and his family in harm’s way though, as the talisman possesses him and places his family in danger.

There seems to always be a horror movie happening. I am sure that everyone is a bit stir crazy in their homes, and some parents could swear that their children are possessed, but that being said, this movie should at the very least make you grateful that your children are not actual demons.

The Rhythm Section – Pushed back another week?
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 28%

Stephanie, played by Blake Lively, loses everything she has known when her family dies in a plane crash. When she finds out that it wasn’t an accident, Stephanie spirals into a world of revenge and murder, to track down who killed everyone she loved.

Jude Law looks amazing in this film, and it feels like a mix of Leon and Wanted. If you are looking for an action-suspense film, then Lively delivers!

Wendy
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 39%

In a retelling of the story of Peter Pan, Wendy, played by Devin France, runs away from her life and finds herself upon a mysterious island. On this beautiful island, there is almost anything you can imagine, but perils too. While dealing with the concept of growing old, and the desire to be free, while missing your home, Wendy fights to find a place for herself.

Primarily what is said the most in reviews, is that the movie is breathtaking, with emotional scenes, and beautiful cinematography, but viewers have felt that it either gets lost in its message or can’t live up to the source material. That being said, it does look gorgeous, and is a more modern retelling of the story, for a slightly older audience.

The Wretched
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 92%

Ben, played by John-Paul Howard, has been rebellious. His parents’ divorce has been hitting him hard. As his actions have pushed his mother to far, he is sent to live with his father and his new girlfriend during the summer, to hold a job in a tourist town. However, plans to force him to learn discipline are disrupted by spirits in the woods are ripping children out of existence.

A horror movie that hopes to connect to this generation as goonies have prior, this movie has really good reviews and will connect with people looking for something to tantalize their horror senses. I don’t know how well this will connect to people though, it taking place during a pandemic, but I hope that it doesn’t trigger anyone.
