National (SUPER) Women’s Health & Fitness Day

If you didn’t notice the title, today is National Women’s Health & Fitness Day! It’s been observed on the last Wednesday in September since it was started in 2002 by the Health Information Resource Center (HIRC). It’s estimated that 80,000 to 100,000 women of all ages, from across the country, will gather to partake in local women’s health and fitness events.

Now I’d like to put our Nerd News Social spin on this and make it National (SUPER) Women’s Health & Fitness Day! How you ask? Well, by sharing with you some super women workouts and pair them with my favorite comics of that superhero. So lets make a challenge! Which one will you do? Share it with us by tagging #WomensHealthFitnessDay and #NerdNewsSocial.

I would also like to add, even though this post has a focus on super “women,” don’t let that stop you from doing these, or any other workouts or comic reading, with any person of your choice.

BATGIRL

Commonly known as Barbara Gordon, daughter of police commissioner James Gordon of Gotham. Later, after being shot and paralyzed by The Joker, she is reimagined as the computer expert, and information broker, Oracle.

The new “Batgirl: Rebirth” series is quite excellent, but this time I’m going to suggest picking up “Batgirl: Year One” (2003). It’s a nine-issue modern miniseries origin story offering new depth and nuance about Barbara’s journey towards the cowl. As she learns the ropes of the vigilante lifestyle, she finds herself thrown into conflict with Batman and the crosshairs of aspiring supervillains.

BLACK CANARY

Black Canary was established as two separate entities: mother and daughter, Dinah Drake-Lance and Dinah Laurel Lance. In the Golden Age of comics, Dinah Drake participated in crime-fighting adventures with her love interest (and eventual husband), Gotham City detective Larry Lance. During the Silver Age of comics, their daughter Dinah Laurel Lance took over the title. She eventually became a member of the Justice Society, the Justice League, Team Arrow and the Birds of Prey.

I know I’m going to get a few disagreements with this comic suggestion, but I’d say pick up “Black Canary: Kicking and Screaming” (2015-2016). Its a modern take on the nature of the “Canary Cry.” After years of being a vigilante, Canary becomes the lead singer in a rock band. But don’t worry, there is plenty of action… and REAL AWESOME MUSIC you can listen to right now at https://blackcanary.bandcamp.com/

WONDER WOMAN

Diana is the daughter of Queen Hippolyta, the first child born on Paradise Island in the three thousand year history that the immortal Amazons lived there. The Greek goddesses drew forth the souls of all women who had been murdered by men and placed them on the island. Diana’s soul originally belonged to the unborn daughter of the first women murdered by a man. Hippolyta, a goddess, created Diana out of clay from Paradise Island and the six members of the Greek Pantheon bonded the soul to the clay and gifted her strength (Demeter), wisdom and courage (Athena), hunters heart and communion with animals (Artemis), beauty and a loving heart (Aphrodite), and sisterhood with fire (Hestia), and speed and the power of flight (Hermes).

The new “Wonder Woman: Rebirth” is very good! But I will be suggesting something a bit older, “Justice League: A League of One” (2000).  It’s a Justice League spin off with Wonder Woman in the spotlight as she and her team face a threat from the ancient world, the last living dragon. You can image that the pages are filled with amazing fantasy art!

CATWOMAN

Don’t you dare say Catwoman is not a hero! She just knows to take care of #1 first. I’d say depending on multiple factors, she can be a hero and she can be a villain. Selina, soon to be Catwoman, began working as a prostitute in the East End of Gotham to get by. Detective George Flannery took pity on her and sent her to Ted Grant, who taught her how to fight. When she saw Batman in action for the first time, he inspired her to fashion her own costume and become a creature of the night: the Catwoman.

I’m going to suggest one of my favorite Batman story arcs of my time for this one, “Batman: The Long Halloween” (1996). And its appropriately a 13 issue story arc. Batman just couldn’t do it without Catwoman in this story arc. Also being a perfect time to pick up since October is just around the corner. Not to mention that Catwoman battles Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, the Mad Hatter, and Two-Face. A must read!

If you are one of the fortunate few who have access to a geek-themed gyms, such as Nerdstrong Gym in North Hollywood, go ahead and give that a go! Just make sure to get up and do what you can. Then get back and read these comics 🙂
