E3 2019 – DAY 3, MONDAY JUNE 10TH – SQUARE ENIX CONFERENCE

Square Enix has a ton of amazing things to announce this year, with most of them being Final Fantasy-related. The very first announcement was probably the coolest one of the hour:

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Remaking FF7, using much improved graphics. Remaking FF7 has allowed us to dive deeper into the characters and game design. There’s going to be 2 bluerays full of gameplay.
We got to see some really compelling gameplay footage for this beloved title.
“…features hybrid gameplay system that merges real-time action with strategic, command-based combat.” From the footage we saw, it looks and feels closer to a Kingdom Hearts of fighting, rather than the turn-based RPG style of fighting that we’re used to. Another cool new addition is the ability to swap characters with a button press. As you land basic attacks, you fill up the ATB bars at the bottom of the screen, which unleash a time slow function. With time slowed to a crawl, you get a chance to really look at your situation and choose options from your command menu. You’ll see familiar things on this menu, like special attacks, spells, and items. Just make sure you have the right materia for whatever spell you’re looking to use! I’m not sure how I feel about using up an entire ATB bar for item use, but we’ll see how that plays out when I get my hands on the game! Completing the tactical nature of the fighting system, you can not only switch to other characters in your team, but also issue them commands. And if you’re into the more fluid style of battle, you can create macros for your favorite moves, so you don’t have to sift through menus each time you hit Tactical Mode.

After watching the battle system in full action, it seemed fluid, cinematic, and engaging. Watching the combat with Cloud and Barrett against the Scorpion Sentinel, even understanding that it was supposed to be in-game footage and everything is in real-time with an actual player instead of a simulated scenario, it felt like I was watching a cut scene. The characters interacted with each other and made comments based on their current situations.

Releasing March 3rd, 2020 on PS4. A pre-order gets you bonus summon materia DLC with the chocobo chick. The Deluxe Edition will include a Cactuar summon materia, steelbook, mini-soundtrack CD, and an art book. The 1st Class Edition will include all of the above, Carbuncle summon materia, and play arts Kai Cloud Strife & Hardy Daytona statue. 1st Class will only be available in the Square Enix store.

Also coming in this expansion pack, we’ll see the return of many characters, including the adorable Minfilia, and new areas, where you’ll be able to go from playing as Warriors of Light to playing Warriors of Darkness. Shatter the tyranny of Light on July 2nd.

This original story is held together with some of the best voice actors out there. We have
Troy Baker as Bruce Banner. Jeff Schine as Captain America. Travis Willingham as Thor. Laura Bailey as Black Widow. And the legendary Nolan North as Tony Stark.
Enjoy 4-player online co-op, where you can expand your roster of heroes and we’re thrilled to see that all updates and DLC to the game will be completely free. No loot boxes, no pay-to-win scenarios. Just destroying evil with your friends, all day, every day.
Releasing worldwide on consoles and PC. There will be early beta access for PS4, and the main game comes May 15th, 2020.

So the name of the game this year is “remake/remaster” for Square Enix. Definitely a lot of goodies here, like FFVII, FFVIII, FF Crystal Chronicles, Last Remnant, Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest, Romancing SaGa and SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions. Either it’s a remake of an old title, or a remaster of one. Either way, it’s the year for nostalgia, and I’m in love!
