Comic Round-Up: National Power Rangers Day

“IT’S MORPHIN TIME!”

“Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” (MMPR or PR) TV series, created by Saban in 1993, is one of the most recognizable franchises in the world. Currently in its 26th season, “Power Rangers Beast Morphers”, it is now the second longest-running non-soap opera scripted program on American TV after “The Simpsons”. There are over 924+ episodes in its library (including the newest series). Currently, Power Rangers is seen in more than 150 markets around the world and translated into numerous languages.

Besides the action, the dreamy cast, and the awesome toys, another reason why PR’s is so successful is because it pioneered diversity, inclusivity, and teamwork exemplifying these values through every episode. Since its launch, the show has continued to lead the way proving that all are equal and anyone can be super.

Growing up with the first season, the very FIRST season, I wanted to be Trini the yellow ranger and date Tommy, the green and then white ranger. There’s a ranger and theme for everyone! I can still remember the theme song, “Go Go Power Rangers”.

Today being “National Power Rangers Day”, yes, they even get their own national day, I wanted to dedicate today’s post to my very bias top 4 PR comics for people who grew up with the brand, and for the newbies. So, in no particular order, here are my recommendations.

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS VOL 1

Longtime fans of the smash-hit show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and newcomers to this ensemble driven series, will discover a deeply compelling world packed with highflying adventure and tremendous heart. Welcome to Angel Grove. Home to the Power Rangers and weekly monster attacks. Tommy Oliver was the new kid in town when evil doer, Rita Repulsa, swooped in and made him the Green Ranger. Now, free from her mind control, Tommy struggles to find balance between the plights of high school, making new friends, and the dangers that come with being a hero. Writer Kyle Higgins (C.O.W.L., Nightwing) and artist Hendry Prasetya (Voodoo vs. Green Lantern) explore the untold story in the life of the Green Ranger as he struggles to overcome his demons and learns to trust again. This collection also features short stories from Steve Orlando (Midnighter), Corin Howell (Bat-Mite), Mairghread Scott (Transformers:Windblade) and Daniel Bayliss (Kennel Block Blues).

SABAN’S GO GO POWER RANGERS VOLUME 1

Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Trini, and Billy have just become the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. They’ve also just started high school. Chronicling their formative days as teen heroes, the Rangers will have to balance the responsibilities of growing up with defending the world from the threat of Rita Repulsa. And she has a plan to defeat the Power Rangers. One they’ll never see coming, because it’ll come from one of their own.

SABAN’S POWER RANGERS: THE PSYCHO PATH

Created by Karone when she was still the evil Astronema, the Psycho Rangers were programmed with overwhelming hate for all things Power Rangers. They were defeated at great personal cost by the Galaxy Rangers, but now someone has brought them back and they are more murderous than ever before.

Who brought them back, and why? And can Lost Galaxy Pink Ranger Karone and her brother Red In Space Ranger Andros stop them before they bring the universe to its knees?

From writer Paul Allor (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Clue) and the fan-favorite artist of Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon Giuseppe Cafaro (Suicide Squad, Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon)!

SABAN’S POWER RANGERS: SOUL OF THE DRAGON

When Tommy Oliver’s son goes missing, he comes out of retirement to find him.

It’s been a long time since Tommy Oliver has served as a Power Ranger. He’s defeated space witches, brought down evil armies, protected the galaxy, but now Tommy leaves protecting the world to the Power Rangers at Space Patrol Delta. But when his son goes missing, it’s up to Tommy to discover a secret in his past, in order to save his future. Now Tommy will call on all his training, his friends, and maybe even some of his enemies as he sets out on his most important mission: find his son and bring him home.

Acclaimed writer Kyle Higgins (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Nightwing), artist Giuseppe Cafaro (Justice League vs Suicide Squad) and special consultant Jason David Frank (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series) present a powerful next chapter for Tommy Oliver, one of the most iconic Power Rangers in history.
