CONNER’S CRITIQUES: First Look At Promare

This is the first feature length film from TRIGGER studios, the creators of the series KILL la Kill and Little Witch Academia; as well as the director Hiroyuki Imaishi, who directed the series GURREN LAGANN and KILL La KILL. Promare uses a bold cell-shaded visual style to tell a very action packed adventure story.

Set 30 years after the appearance of the Burnish, people with a mutated ability to wield fire, half the world has been destroyed by fire. Anti-burnish rescue teams fight the fires caused by the Burnish using mech-suits and anti-Burnish technology. While a group known as the “Freeze Force” act as militant cops to arrest Burnish violators. The story is focused around Gala Thymos, a new member of the anti-Burnish rescue team “Burning Rescue”, and the leader of a group of the Burnish known as “Mad Burnish”, Lio Fotia.

Promare is almost none stop action throughout the entire film, the main character Galo is fun to watch and has a deep sense of honor. At times the action sequences go so fast and are visually so intense it was hard to keep up with the subtitled dialogue, but that was a minor issue in the long run. The heavy angle based animation is a little odd but you get used to it fairly quickly after the first 10 minutes. Fans of TRIGGER or Hiroyuki Imaishi will see similarities to their other works. Overall the film is fun and has a good story, high action sequences, and even in the less animated scenes there is this sense of movement that helps make those interesting to watch at as well.
