SDCC 2018 First Look – SYFY Channel Human Claw

SYFY channel brought a unique experience to SDCC this year, a human claw machine. This is located at the San Diego’s New Children’s Museum. Myself and others took part becoming the claw and finding out that it is harder than you would think to grab that prize. The prizes were mystery boxes containing various prizes, ranging from t-shirts to Funko Pops. Each day they partnered with Bait and a different artist and put in a sweatshirt featuring artwork by the artist of the day.

Now as I said before getting the prize box was no easy task. After all the legal waivers are done, you are put into a harness and hooked to a crane. After falling forward, you are lifted up and to the edge of the prize pit, while one of the crew holds your feet to help steady you and another operates the crane. The crane operator has a sense of humor when operating it brining just within reach and then back up teasing you as you try to grab your prize, how long he does this is up to him and you, but he does make you really work to get that prize box. Once you have a prize you are lowered back to the ground to see what you got.

The whole experience was very fun and entertaining, people were lined up hours before it was open to try and get their shot a prize. The boxes and the prizes they held were great ways to talk to other con goers as everyone wanted to know, “what’s in the box?”
