Resident Evil Reboot? Already?!

15 years ago, Milla Jovovich walked into the Resident Evil universe (Movie Universe that is…) and 6 movies later, the gauntlet was run.

However, as we know to well, when a company has spent money on a franchise, they don’t like to have to give it up, either by making sequel after sequel (not a job on the 6 movies mentioned prior, promise) or reboot.

While we don’t know if there is a clause that states they have to make a Resident Evil movie every (insert arbitrary number) of years or they loose the rights, it’s starting to look that way.
With Resident Evil: The Final Chapter on shelves last Tuesday, it seems almost surreal that Final Chapter was so less final, so soon to it’s release. Well lets be honest with ourselves, we didn’t really think that it was going to be final. They keep making games, why would they stop making movies?

Constantin Films even went so far as saying that they wanted another 6 films. While everyone is calling this a reboot, it might be more fun if it just ran parallel to the prior movies, so as not to destroy an entire existing history for fans to follow.

If you as a fan was surprised by the news of the reboot, guess how Milla Jovovich took the news. “They’ve announced a reboot? Okay, well good luck with that.” My thoughts exactly.

“I think a lot of people with these franchises kind of put the cart before the horse, there’s a danger to that. They’ve been wanting to reboot Resident Evil for a long time, and listen: I love the Resident Evil world. I think it’s a great property, I would do it if I was a producer. I think what made Resident Evil so special is that the people involved really loved what they’re doing and really were fans of the game. I would suggest that you find people that have that same passion for the property before you talk about reboots. I think if you get into this kind of genre, people are very sensitive to fakes. There’s some real fans in the sci-fi/action/horror world, and they’re not idiots. They can smell when something is done because people love it and when something is done just to monetize an opportunity.”

With that though Constantin Films have tapped James Wan, famous from films like Saw and Insidious to name a few. As for the script, it’s being written by Greg Russo, who is currently working on the Mortal Kombat reboot. So he has experience in video game movies, and more precisely video game movie reboots.

I’m willing to give it a try, maybe not 6 tries though. Man’s got to have his limits.
