Resident Evil 2: Comic Con Panel Details

Resident Evil has been such a knockout franchise that Capcom is re-making their 1998 Resident Evil 2 game to be released as a “nostalgic but new” version in January 25, 2019. For those who don’t know this version of the game, it’s a survival horror game that came out on the original PlayStation. The player is in control of a rookie cop, Leon S. Kennedy, and also Claire Redfield who is looking for her missing brother. The town, Raccoon City, has its citizens transformed into zombies by a biological weapon. In the game, you use both characters in their own storylines and who have their own obstacles to explore the city, solve puzzles, and combat the zombies. Resident Evil 2’s 1998 version has been known as one of the best games ever made.

So you could imagine how packed the panel was and how excited the fans were to see Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, the Capcom programmer, writer, and producer of the game since 2002, flown in from Capcom Japan headquarters to talk about the 2019 version. One thing that Hirabayashi preached is that it will stay true to the original. Since the game was released originally in 1998, there are a few minor adjustments that had to be made but it will have the same feel of the original game and original time period. With newer graphics potential and more ability to move around the game than before, certain things need to be updated and adjusted for the adventure.

The first thing you will notice are the character designs of Leon and Claire. Like Hirabayashi said before, still based on the original look and feel, but you will notice some updated changes. The outfits will look extremely realistic. That is because they actually hired professionals to create the costumes in real life, then scanned them into the game using a process called photogrammetry. Specifically for Leon, you will see an updated vest, logo, utility belt, and knee pads. For Claire first thing you will notice is she is now in full length pants and leather motorcycle jacket with a very cool logo due to her riding an officially licensed Harley Davidson motorcycle. It’s more true to the characters to be wearing these kinds of clothes.

In the city itself, Hirabayashi states that he wants to focus the city on a texture and feel of “wetness and darkness” and as you can find in the trailer, it looks amazing! Also the zombie inhabitants of the city might look familiar to some. The reference of some of the zombies in the game are from real people involved in the game itself!

Be prepared for lots of high quality gore in the game which will also be available as as just the game for $59.99 or an amazing collectors edition deluxe DLC pack with a pre-order bonus for $199.99 at GameStop.
