Pokemon Go: Gifting Event

Hey, Trainers! Prepare to unleash your inner Delibird as Pokemon GO’s Gifting Event is about to start!

From August 5th through to the 19th, you will notice a few marked differences to the Gift exchange system in Pokemon GO.

For those of you who may still be unfamiliar with this mechanic, I’ll jot down a brief summary; When you enter a Trainer’s friend code into the ‘New Friend’ option on the Friends tab of your Trainer screen, you can become… well. Friends. This allows you to collect Gifts from spinning Pokestops and Gyms and then send those Gifts to these Trainers. Send one a day and your friendship level will increase, allowing for reduced Stardust costs when Trading, and bonuses to attack power when Raiding or battling Gyms together, as well as additional Premier Balls when you battle with a Friend in a Raid.

The temporary boosts will be:

  • You will be able to carry 20 Gifts instead of 10.
  • You will be able to open 30 Gifts instead of 20
  • All Eggs received in Gifts will be 2Km Eggs, but with the usual cadre of 7Km Pokemon inside; Alolan forms and Babies.
  • You may hatch a Shiny Bonsly!
  • A Shiny Bonsly, you may ask? Sure. Why not. (We already have Shiny Wynaut.)

    Spotlight on Bonsly

Bonsly is one of the baby Pokemon introduced in Generation four alongside the likes of Happiny and Mime Jr. The Pokedex informs us that it needs a dry environment; in fact, too much moisture in its body will kill it so it consistently leaks moisture from its eyes. This is a dual purpose leakage – it not only regulates its internal moisture, but fools enemies into leaving it alone out of pity. Who would want to be seen attacking a crying baby, after all? Where things get weird is that the composition of this moisture is very much like that of human sweat.

    It sweats from the eyes.

And you thought the sweaty toothed madman from Dead Poet’s Society was unsettling. Todd and Mr. Keating got nothing on this Pokemon.

It evolves into Sudowoodo, given enough Candy. Sudowoodo was introduced to us in Generation two, and functioned much like Snorlax in that it blocked a pathway and we needed to obtain an item in order to enrage it and make it attack us, allowing for defeat or capture. The Pokedex helpfully lets us know that it is a hit with the elderly to the point where there is a monthly periodical dealing only with Sudowoodo. Apparently the older folks in Alola prize Sudowoodo with large green hands and obsess over the angles and lines of the Pokemon’s arms. So, there’s that. It also hates water and tends to disappear whenever it’s raining. Its disguise as a tree is only as good as the season you spot it because its hands remain green year round, and it’s easy to see in the winter. Even though it mimics a tree, it’s very definitely not a plant and is closer to a rock than anything else.

So. Where does our sweaty eyed fake tree stack up in Pokemon GO?

With a Max CP of 2148, Attack of 167, Defense of 176, and Stamina of 172…. yeah. Okay. I can see why this thing likes to hide so much. It’s a pure rock type that is severely outclassed by so many other Rock types, it’s hard to see a niche for Sudowoodo in the metagame. It’s weak to Grass, Fighting, Steel, Ground and of course Water. It’s strong against Normal, Fire, Poison and Flying.

As for moves, it gets Counter and Rock Throw for STAB. For Charge Moves it gets Earthquake and Stone Edge for STAB.

Shiny Bonsly has bright pink ‘leaves’ and a slightly lighter body tone. Shiny Sudowoodo gets autumnal toned ‘leaves’ and a dark green ‘trunk’. Both are pretty distinct from their regular coloration so should be easy to spot!

Well, Trainers, hopefully you’re able to get your own little shiny bonsai-baby. And I hope you also get all the gifts you could ever need! Feel free to share Trainer Codes in the comments if you find yourself in need of buddies to swap gifts with!
