Rochelle Hit’s Up The Madcap Motel

Something strange has popped up in the Downtown LA Arts District, and its name happens to fit it perfectly. The Madcap Motel will dazzle you with the bizarre, delight you with some retro feels from the 1960’s, and cater to your curiosity. Yes, it’s part immersive theatre, part art exhibit, and a whole lot of fun! Check-in now to one (or all) of the 18 rooms that make up this grand adventure through the wormhole.

Since this is an indoor event, masks are required. Rest assured, they follow Covid safety protocols. Many doors and displays in the room will be touched, so there is hand sanitizer in every room.

Crossing the threshold to the Madcap feels like crossing into another dimension like The Twilight Zone, especially something eerily reminiscent of Disneyland’s now-departed Tower of Terror… minus the terror factor. Complete with one of the room service maids to make you feel comfortable during your stay at the motel, the story begins, and the bizarre unfolds. It’s 1966 and Dr. Sando, with help from the staff, has opened up a wormhole and transported us into Elsewhere because, let’s face it, reality is bleak, boring, or overrated. With this story guiding you into the atrium, you are essentially now in this land of Elsewhere, a playground complete with a proper 60s soundtrack, and each room getting curiouser and curiouser that even Alice herself would feel right at home.

Yes, there were times I felt like I was in Wonderland or even Beyond the Looking Glass, especially in the mirrored room with the floating rainbow lanterns.

Open each door to a new surprise that will pique your interest. Each room essentially feels like an interactive art exhibit. A room in an underwater landscape complete with a submarine. A room of giants and a room that is askew. A room that literally puts you in the spotlight. And a room that could entertain you for hours like an arcade. Among many more whimsical and delightful installations.

The hosts and actors did an amazing job making us feel welcome and moving the story along. There is an associate/housekeeper in each room to ensure we are all well-behaved and to snap our photos if we need an extra set of hands… if only the doctor could have sprouted a few more on us during our journey! Truly, the photo ops are endless and you’ll want to capture every moment of your time in Elsewhere. The actors in the Atrium will chat you up, staying completely in character, quirks and all. They are there to show you around if you have any questions. And, once you’ve explored to your heart’s content, they are there to show you the way out, through Room 7. This final door is the final chapter in your story at the Madcap, and it is a delightful and fitting ending to the rest of the theme.

Should you choose to take home a memento of your trip, there are souvenirs available for purchase. And don’t forget to use the restroom while you’re there. It’s groovy, baby.
