What You Should Know About Aquaman

Anyone know who Arthur Curry is? Well how about Aquaman? Yep… They are one in the same. Like 99% of the people I know, I never got into the DC Justice League hero Aquaman. Most of what I have seen of Aquaman has been funny memes and cartoons, such as from Robot Chicken and Family Guy, which made fun of him and his “powers.” Not to say he didn’t have some good portrayals, such as in Young Justice as “Orion” and… well for me that’s it. Sadly, from what I’ve seen in critic reviews about this latest movie coming out December 21st, it doesn’t seem like it will be all that great in story. But you can for sure bet I will watch it eventually because of Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa! I’ve seen horrible, but funny, headline reviews of the movie such as “If Aquaman was a worse movie, it would have been a better one.” – The Verge and also “Our hero Swims. His Movie Sinks.” – The New York Times. I have heard great things about the graphics though! But we are not here to talk about weather its a good or a bad movie, we are here to find out who is Arthur Curry and where did he come from? There are slight alterations of his origins through the different ages of comics and reboots so let’s briefly go over them.

In the Golden Age of comics around the 1940’s, Aquaman was created by Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris and first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 in 1941. In Arthur’s first appearances in comics, he was able to breathe underwater, swim at high speeds, communicate with marine life, and have incredible strength. Arthur Curry was the son of Atlanna, an Atlantean princess banished from Atlantis due to her interest in and frequent visits to the surface world, and Tom Curry, a lighthouse keeper living in Amensty Bay, Maine. Both parents first meet each during a terrible storm one night, when Curry finds Atlanna thrown up on the shore by storm-tossed waves, and rescues her from harm. Both Curry and Atlanna made the lighthouse their home and developed a strong bond that would quickly lead to a sentimental relationship when Arthur was born. Several years after Arthur was born, Atlanna, on her deathbed, revealed to her husband and son her true origins and that Arthur has special powers. After her death, Arthur’s father became determined to train him so that one day he can be in control of his powers, and his true destiny, to be king of Atlantis. He would then marry Mera, a visitor from another water-world known as Xebel.

Through the Silver Age of comics in the 1950’s, Aquaman had a sidekick octopus named Topo, he married a human and had a son named Orm who hated his father for not having the same powers and thus became one of Aquaman’s greatest adversaries known as Ocean Master. Unfortunately, Arthur was now depicted in having to make contact with the water every other hour or he’ll die of dehydration. LAME.

In the 1980’s which is called the Modern Age of comics, Aquaman’s origins were rebooted during the Crisis on Infinite Earths comics. This time he was born in Atlantis but cast out to be left for dead, raised by dolphins, then found by Tom Curry at the lighthouse who raised him till he died. Then Arthur went to live in Alaska where he fell in love with, and impregnated Kako who was a native to Alaska, but Arthur had to leave due to a demon and was then imprisoned. He then met Vulko who later on leads a revolution and claims his birthright as the King of Atlantis which really pisses off Arthur.

In the New 52 DC comics, it’s a combo of Golden and Silver age. Then with Rebirth series he is King of Atlantis and mostly deals with the tensions between his country and the surface world. I’m sure it’s more interesting than I am making it sound, but I really can’t make it sound much better, haha.

There has been some cool stuff I found out, like for a brief time he had a hook for a cybernetic hand and then upgrades to a magical hand made out of water from the secret sea given to him by the Lady of the Lake. Also his weapon of choice is The Kings Trident which is indestructible and makes him the only member in the Justice League to make Darkseid bleed! So let us know in the comments what do you think of Aquaman. Are you more or less interested in Aquaman? Will you be seeing the movie? Do you have any favorite Aquaman moments in comics/TV/movies?
