Video Games for the Week of December 10th, 2019

PS4, Xbox One, & Switch

Blacksad: Under the Skin by Microids
Set in the early 50s, this game is reminiscent of a noir film, complete with gumshoe cat man John Blacksad. Investigate the disappearance of boxer Robert Yale in this comic-made-game investigative RPG. Each choice you make directly influences the story, the characters you interact with, and the ending itself. This game is intricate, complex, and involved, with over 30 characters who all have their own detailed stories and personalities. Don’t sell it short just because the people are also animals. Remember BoJack Horseman? This game is dark. It’s rated Mature for a reason, and those reasons are sexual themes. An automatic tick in the “reasons to buy this game” box for me.

PS4 & Switch

Gensou SkyDrift by Unties
Another on the list of games from the early 2000s is Gensou SkyDrift. A 3D racer with gameplay reminiscent of Mario Kart and Sonic Riders. That’s no wonder, considering several people who worked on Mario Kart had a hand in this game! Featuring an anime look and feel, there’s something truly beautiful about playing as a Shrine Maiden as you drift through the Hell of Blazing Fires stage, leaving everyone else in your dust to probably be roasted alive I don’t really know. Because you can play online with friends, I’m wondering if the Switch version will allow multiplayer by linking consoles.

Switch

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger by Ubisoft
This wild west tribute from 7 years ago is coming to the Switch! Meet and probably kill all the best outlaws from Billy the Kid to Jesse James, and all the legendary rootin’ tootin’, sharp shootin’ bandits and murderers in between! Play a ruthless bounty hunter, Silas Greaves, in the early 1900s Midwest. Take the law into your own hands and dispense justice the old fashioned way in this first person action adventure. It was a fan favorite on PS3, XBox 360, and PC for years, boasting some of the more accurate shooting mechanics in gaming at the time, and levels that were impressive and immersive. Now that it’s on Switch, you can relive a great shooter in the comfort of your office or Uber.

Fishing: Barents Sea by Astragon
If you love the serenity of fishing, and collecting every type of sea game without all that outdoors and fish murdering stuff, you’ll enjoy Fishin: Barents Sea. You don’t need your own boat, someone who knows how to sail, or any equipment other than your switch and maybe some sunblock if you’re gaming at the beach. This fantastic encounter with the beasts of the ocean treats you to something new: an adventure on the Barents Sea, and an encounter with the King Crab. Yup, it’s the Complete Edition, so you get the core game and the King Crab DLC! You inherited this boat from your father, who helped to mold you into one of the greated fishboat captains there is. Fish with longlines, nets, or trawls, earn money, and get some sweet boat upgrades as you sail the open environment around northern Norway. Don’t forget to use your sonar to find that menace of a king crab, either.
