SDCC 2019 – Deadquarters First Look

With The Walking Dead comic book coming to an end, and the TV series going into its 10th season and Michonne’s last, TWD is also once again a really big deal at comic con this year. For many years running they are also on the con badges. So you best believe they stepped up the Deadquarters experience this year which is a combo of “The Walking Dead” and “Fear The Walking Dead”.

Upon walking in, one amazing thing they are doing this year is a food drive! I found this kind of interesting because zombies feast for brains, which is basically food for them. But there was nothing funny or weird about this food drive. Bring food or donate, you will be entered into a raffle to win an autograph from a cast member. It was actually amazing how many people were in line to do this. So glad a show like this could bring upon so much kindness in people.

Now, of course the place was crawling with zombies. But they for the most part left the donation area alone. Noticeable areas were a treehouse to the left, a crashed cargo plane to the right, and a kind of bunker up ahead. The treehouse was two person experience where one person lowers a bird cage, and the other can escape one of two ways out of the treehouse. By rope or by latter. The cargo plane was interesting, you walk in and find a video playing on a camcorder left behind about someone talking about their zombie experience. Then at the end when you try to leave out the door… a brain hungry zombie is slightly trapped and trying to escape and of course blocking the door.

Lastly in for this experience is a big one! You enter this bunker and are greeted by an actor, ahem, I mean a survivor. Door closes behind you and you, the survivor, and 4 others hear his story, how you must travel, and winter is upon you! Oops wrong story, but yea still, it’s winter you can hear the snow. He grabs his lantern and you all grab a rope while you enter into the next room. In here, it’s cold and there is actually the feeling of snow falling on your face. But don’t let that fool you! There are zombies everywhere in the icy and snowy area! So you have to watch out! I’ll leave the rest as a mystery so not to spoil what happens, but obviously I escaped because here I am!

If and when you exit successfully you are in a new room where there are multiple TWD gaming experiences. One was again from last year, “The Walking Dead: Our World”. Another was a slots mobile game cleverly named as “The Walking Dead Slots”, and the last game was an incredible VR experience called “The Walking Dead: Onslaught”. Even though this game is technically still in development, it was amazing! You can play with the usual move forward with joysticks, or you can use a swinging your arms when you walk which kept away any motion sickness. Each character you play can wield any weapon but each player has a specialization in which their skills are better in particular ones. There are such great mechanics from how you load and switch your weapon, to how many little pieces you can chop the zombies bodies into. Even down to cutting down each limb at each joint. I can’t say enough great things about this game and about the experience in the bunker area. Just keep an eye out for Onslaught and Michonne’s last season of The Walking Dead.
