August Community Day – Magikarp

Hey, Trainers!

So, August is nearly upon us and with that comes a brand new Community Day. It’s going to be Saturday, August 8th from 11:00am until 5:00pm.

I’m not going to dance around the issue – most of the discourse I’ve seen online about Niantic’s pick for August has been negative. And that’s somewhat understandable. Magikarp was the very first Shiny ever released in the game, and we’ve had multiple, multiple events featuring them and plenty of opportunities to snag Shiny Karps of our own.

Well. Most of us.

Here’s my take on it, and you can feel free to disagree if you like; not everyone has one of these. Be it players who’ve only recently joined the fray and are just starting out (Hey, I see you there rookies! Go get’em!) or people who left the game for a while and are now starting back up on their journey, there are Trainers out there who are missing this one, excellent addition to their Pokedex. There are also people who still don’t have their Fisherman badge and this event will let them catch more XL sized Karp for that purpose, too. Not only that, but Magikarp costs 400 Candies to Evolve so some folks, even if they do have a Shiny, may not have the Candy required to turn it into a red Gyarados – A Community Day level of spawns will see those Candies rack up fast. It won’t hurt us consistently, long time players to give up one Community Day to let these folks catch up and join in the fun, right?

Anyway, with my two cents spent, what bonuses can we expect to see? Glad you asked!

  • Photobombs! I’m assuming this will be Magikarp and that there will be 5 of them.
  • Event Field Research.
  • A Community Day Box featuring 30 Ultra Balls, 6 Star Pieces, Elite Charged TM and an Incense.
  • Incense will last 3 hours if activated during the event.
  • My favorite, 3x Catch Stardust.
  • Evolve your Magikarp between 11:00am and 7:00pm to get the Community Day exclusive move, Aqua Tail.
  • A $1 paid Research quest line entitled ‘Making a Splash.’
  • Increased spawns with the likelihood of catching a Shiny increased.
  • So, I’ve broken down Magikarp and Gyarados before. You can find that article Here , but of course, we have the addition of Aqua Tail as the Community Day move. Aqua Tail, as is generally the way with the Community Day Attack is going to be an awesome option for your fishy friend.

One other update to Gyarados is on the way, of course! Mega Evolution.

As always, I wish you the absolute best of luck! Be safe out there and have a great Community Day!
