Rochelle Steps Out For The Wizard’s Den Bar

The Wizard’s Den Bar in Hollywood is like a cocktail of all of my favorite things in one place: magic, immersive and theatrical storytelling, riddles, and drinks. By all means, it is truly a hidden gem. The unassuming location is much like finding Platform 9 ¾ in Harry Potter. Luckily a witch is there to greet you by the door and lead you up the steps to where the wizardry reigns.

Before we go into the details of the events, we want to remind people that we are still within the thralls of a pandemic, and recommend people check out our article on “If You Should Go Out” Here. They take Covid precautions seriously. Sessions are limited to 20 guests max, and all guests are required to wear a mask and sit at the table with their own parties. You may only unmask when you drink. And you must remain seated at your table for the duration of the story. Hand sanitizer is readily available at each table and when you enter.

First you must choose a wand, or let the wand choose you. Whichever wand you touch is yours during your visit.

Afterwards they seat you at your table, but not before you can take a quick glance around to admire the dimly lit atmosphere, complete with a fog machine to lend an ethereal mood. The setting around us is very mystical and fitting to the theme. You’ll see antique furniture with dusty books and glass potions. Books and chairs float above you to remind you that the levitation spell had been cast before your arrival. Truly the magic is strong here, probably because you have entered the world of Morticia Le Mort. Cauldrons and small candles are stationed at every table, and as soon as you arrive, you receive your first cocktail. A sweet butterscotch beverage that whets your taste buds and makes you crave more. And then the real magic begins once all guests have arrived.

I had no idea that this experience was also an immersive, storytelling one, and what a pleasant and welcome surprise it was! You are essentially a student there perfecting your potion-making. Is your spellcasting a bit rusty? You will certainly find out! (Mine was!) The wise potions master leads your lessons, along with her minions there to help. It’s a combination of riddles and problem-solving, reminiscent of escape rooms. As each lesson unfolds, you unlock more ingredients to perfectly brew your potion, and I will say all 3 potions were delicious! I’m a sucker for those sweet cocktails, so it was so hard to choose a favorite. And speaking of choices, there is something you have to ask yourself: Are you a good witch or a bad witch? The choices you make will reveal the truth.

This 90-minute experience was truly spectacular, especially given the limitations during these Covid times. It’s been over a year that I’ve been out to a bar so it was a welcomed experience, and again, anything magical or fantastical like this only ranks it that much higher. This unique experience is for Wizards and Muggles alike, so get your tickets now! Tickets start at $40 per person, and this event runs through August 2021.
