Nerd Taste Of Los Angeles: Celebrate Free Museum Day

The Smithsonian Magazine is bringing back their well loved and appreciated Free Museum Day, on September 21, 2019. Museums and cultural institutions around Los Angeles have been opening their doors, in in the hope that people who normally wouldn’t attend, will join them.

It’s with that in mind that we have brought you a list of Los Angeles specific Museums that are participating in the program, and even some that have free admission year round!

Remember though, Museum day provides up to free admission for two people, and you need to get your tickets quickly before they are gone!

The Autry Museum

Nestled in Griffith Park, this museum features art, photography, and memorabilia of the past, focusing on the history and culture of the American West.

Featuring exhibits on the Native American Folk Lore of the Coyote shapeshifting trickster, the history of Griffith Park, a kid friendly movie studio space that allows children to make their own western movies.

Japanese American National Museum

Within the district of Little Tokyo, the Japanese American National Museum’s purpose is to share the Japanese American experience, as well as a place for Japanese Americans to explore their heritage.

Featuring exhibits with objects, and photographs of Japanese American immigrants, and a reconstruction of the original barrack structure from the Heart Mountain Internment Camp from World War II.

USC Pacific Asia Museum

Opening in the early 70s this museum is till today the only museum focusing on the Pacific Asia culture curated by a research university. Their purpose is, and always has been, to bridge the knowledge gap between cultures in society, and educate people about the arts of the asian and pacific islands.

Their exhibits focus on found photography of US soldiers in World War II, and the work of artists that have been inspired by those photographs.

Museum of Latin American Art

This museum is dedicated to the appreciation of modern and contemproary art of Latino and Latin Americans.

Their exhibits include: A focus on the ocean and the desert; Works of art focusing on history and the present; And their ongoing sculpture garden.
