New Year, New Books!

Happy New Year my Nerds! Hope that hangover is gone by now. It’s that time of year where people start setting goals that they end up giving up in a few months, including me, but there is one goal I alway keep. Every start of the new year I like to set a reading goal. There are so many benefits of reading every day including stress reduction, memory improvement, and stronger analytic thinking to name a few textbook terms. But what I love about reading is connecting with others, getting out my head and into a new world, and obviously the art!

Let’s not talk numbers, this is not meant to stress you out, let’s talk about how you can get started and what you can do to keep reading.

  1. Take a book with you everywhere you go. There could be times during the day where you’re stuck waiting, or on your lunch break, and those are perfect times to read! Keeping a book with you guarantees some reading.
  2. Start a friend book club! If you loved a book, share it with your friends and talk about it together. The book next round could be chosen by another friend and so forth. Soon, you’ll have a list of new books to read that you probably haven’t heard of before.
  3. Start a series. Do some research, figure out which one you want to commit to, and go for it! Starting a series means you have a goal and more story to look forward to.

There are a few series that I love and will continue to read such as Saga, Rat Queens, The Wicked + The Divine, and anything Batman. But I am very much looking forward to new stuff. If there is anything you wish to recommend or are excited to read, please list them in the comments. If you need help getting started, here is the Los Angeles Library’s best books of 2018. Another thing that I’d like to mention is to check out your local comic shop, some of them actually have book clubs or can recommend new books based off your previous purchases. I personally love the website Goodreads which allows me to monitor my reading goal, chat about books and read reviews, and also see what my other friends are reading. If there are any other ways you know about, please share. Now what are you waiting for? Stop reading this and pick up a book!
