Movies and Videos On Demand For The Week Of September 4, 2020

As we prepare for the opening of theaters and the return to normal life practices, we want to remind people that we are still within the thralls of a pandemic, and recommend people check out our article on ”If You Should Go Out” Here. Until then though, if you do go to a theater make sure it has a policy of requiring attendees to wear masks, and sit in isolated groups out of proximity of other viewers.

The Argument – Releasing in Theaters and Streaming

Jack, played by Dan Fogler, and Lisa, played by Charlotte McKinney, are throwing a cocktail party for their friends. Everything is going great until an argument throws a wrench in the evening. However, it’s never resolved because everyone just calls it an end of the night. When Jack and Lisa decide to find a solution to the argument, they decide the best way is to recreate that fight, and party over and over again.

A fight can push a lot of people to their limits, and force people to say things they regret, or have been harboring for some time. This movie might be a bit much for people who have been sheltering in place with a loved one, and pushed to the edge by it. However, it could also be a relief that they aren’t going through this. Frankly, I’m just glad to see Danny Pudi getting work!

Critical Thinking – Releasing in Theaters and Streaming

In 1998, a teacher in the ghettos of Miami will convince, inspire, and teach five multi-racial teenagers the skill and techniques of chess, all the way to the National Chess Championship.

John Leguizamo plays the teacher in this story. If you are a fan of inspirational teach stories, or under dog heart string pulls, then I highly recommend checking this movie out. Also, if you are a fan of the game of chess, it couldn’t hurt.

My Brothers’ Crossing – Releasing in Theaters

Based on a true story of an accident that happened a couple years back in Virginia, this movie tells the tale of two families brought together, and against each other by tragedy. CJ Martin, played by James Black, was a good man, who made a mistake that lead to a terrible car accident that claimed the lives of two people. After the accident though, their grieving survivor JT Clark, played by Daniel Roebuck, pushes for the police to press vehicular manslaughter charges. The town’s racism, and separation of ethnicities comes to boil, and the question of forgiveness is called into question.

This is a tough movie, but it’s intent is to shine a light on this situation, and hopefully show a bit of compassion through a bleak moment. I can only hope that faith, love, and respect can get us through our current times as well.

The Owners – Releasing in Theaters and Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 80%

Mary, played by Maisie Williams, and her boyfriend need to start a new life, with their child, but before they can, they need one big easy score. When her boyfriend and his friends decide to perform a home invasion on an elderly couple things get out of hand. Now the group of friends are at the mercy of the homeowners.

Talk about castle doctrine. But seriously though, I love a story where the elderly are not only secretly bad ass, but can take care of themselves. The movie tries to paint them as the villains, but I can’t get over the fact that they are the victims when watching the trailers. If you are looking for a good thriller with a couple of jump scares, check this movie out.

Tenet – Releasing in Theaters

The main character, played by John David Washington, is pulled into a journey of espionage as he attempts to save the world armed with his wits, his skill, and a mind warping understanding of time.

This movie has been pushed back multiple times, and eventually the studio got so frustrated that it was released in other countries before the USA because of our lack in proper response to COVID-19. However, as it releases in theaters, and only in theaters, people have to decide if this film is worth watching to brave COVID-19. I know the film is tripy, and a sci-fi wet dream, but it has not received the massive response people had hoped for as they waited for so long. It might be worth waiting to watch it from the safety of your home.
