Movies Releasing For The Week of November 23

We are back for another week. Ready to get my … Interesting take on movies?

Normally we talk about movies that come out tomorrow, but since the holiday most of these came out a day or so ago. So this might be the second movie you see this week. That being said, this is what we suggest you watching.

Creed II – Releasing 11/21/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

The sequel to the spin off franchise of Adonis Creed, son of Apollo Creed. A ghost from the past returns to the forefront. Drago returns, with his son. The introduction of the man who killed his father, and the challenge from his son to fight in the ring pushes Adonis, and Rocky to their breaking point. While his family, and Rocky try to talk him out of it, Adonis feels like the fight between himself and Drago’s son is something he can’t walk away from.

Normally, a movie like this would feel like a cash grab, but unlike the new Rambo film, the series focusing on the son of Apollo has felt like a stepping aside from Sylvester Stalone, and creating a movie for a new generation with ties to an older generations series. It works for me. That’s why Creed was so powerful for so many people. Instead of manufacturing an enemy, and fake drama, they use the existing drama from the well established world. I’m also happy to see Drago return. If you loved Creed, all indications show that this film is going to be even better.

Green Book – Releasing 11/23/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 100%

A world class pianist, and native of Manhattan takes a concert tour of the deep south. Worried about his safety within the south as an African American, he hires an Italian-American bouncer from the Bronx to drive him and protect him as he goes on his tour. They attempt to follow the suggestions of “The Green Book” to keep them safe in establishments that were not opposed to an African American. However, regardless of their attempts they still face racism, within their union, and outside of it. Through the journey they become friends, and grow as people.

Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali kill in their performances, and makes the story feel impressive and powerful. While a period piece, the story still today makes a point, and pulls at topical issues that unfortunately are still prevalent today. This movie is definitely worth watching regardless of race or creed.

Ralph Breaks the Internet – Releasing 11/23/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

Vanellope Von Schweetz’s game breaks. The controller is gone, and that means the death of the players within the game. Before it can be unplugged Ralph helps save all the people by bringing them into the surge protector. Then the idea comes to fix Vanellope’s game so that she has her home back. To do So Wreck it Ralph and Vanellope must venture into the internet, make money, and find a way to get the part required to save her world.

This can go so many ways. It can be amazing, or it can fall short. From the content available in trailers, it looks pretty amazing. That could always fall short, but I believe that it will stand on it’s own, right now. In a couple years however it will not fall short. The problem with making a movie where the internet is key, is that it will likely be based off of a ton of memes, and they will be dated.

Robin Hood – Releasing 11/23/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

The age old, and told, and told story of Robin hood, from the crusade, with the aid of a Moorish commander rise up to fight the tyranny of a corrupt English ruler.

Taron Egerton takes up the mantle of Robin Hood, and Jamie Foxx takes up the task of training him in that effort. While the film attempts to deliver a more modern paced, action packed adventure film, it seems to fall short in its presentation. However it is an action film, and people need an action film every week. This is that film.

Welcome to Marwen – Releasing 11/23/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

Mark Hogancamp is a veteran. He returns home, and is attacked by local toughs. The attack takes away what he can remember of his past, and weakens him. As a way to cope with his loss of memories, and to push forward he begins work on an art installation of a miniature fictional town called Marwen. Within the town are a group of powerful women who help the avatar of himself, and allows him to heal and recover what little he has left.

This is a breathtaking story, with a style of cinematography that is unique to the movie. Using the style and medium, it pulls you in and tugs at your heart is powerful ways. The closest I could compare this to, is a journey film akin to “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, where a broken and depressed man is able to find piece and a part of himself that he needed and wanted. I will add however that Steve Carell’s performance is apparently amazing and creates a perfect binding agent to the devastating, and uplifting film.
