Movies Releasing For The Week of December 7

We are back for another week. Ready to get my … Interesting take on movies?

Here is what movies are coming out tomorrow, and if we suggest you watching them.

Ben is Back – Releasing 12/07/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 83%

Holly welcomes home her 19 year old son, Ben on Christmas Eve. Ben has a problem though. Ben has had a history of drug use, and Holly is worried he may backslide. Through the movie, Holly’s faith and love in Ben is put to the test, as she struggles to keep him safe, and clean.

This looks like a very painful holiday movie, with Lucas Hedges playing the son, and Julia Roberts the mother. I imagine in the end the movie will focus on the growth of the characters and an underlying point for the piece, but be warned this is a heavy handed drama.

Mary Queen of Scots – Releasing 12/07/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

Once again the theater explores the life of Mary Queen of Scots. Covering Mary Stuart from 16, when she was the Queen of France. When she is widowed at 18, she refuses to remarry and moves back to Scotland. At this time though, Scotland falls under the rule of Elizabeth I. The battle between the two Queens, and the two nations causes drama that will affect the whole nation.

This is a very drama heavy week. If you are a solid comedy and action fan, you might want to sit this week out. That being said, if you like historical dramas, then this film would be something you’d be interested in. While it’s hard to say if the piece is amazing, it does have an impressive production value, and the scenery is amazing at least. If this movie fails on every other part, at least there is that.

Swimming with Men – Releasing 12/07/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 44%

An accountant finds a new life in the form of a synchronized swim team. Taking himself out of his rut, he finds a sense of purpose in the group’s goal to a world championship, that no one in the group is actually likely to achieve.

This movie is a very offbeat, and very quirky. This movie might remind you a bit of the start of Wanted, but instead of becoming a hit-man, he decided to work out his life while also joining a synchronized swimming troupe. It’s a weird comedy for those who are into that sort of thing.

Under the Silver Lake – Releasing 12/07/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 57%

A 33 year old shut-in becomes obsessed with a strange women who disappears. His obsession leads him down a rabbit hole of mystery that he did not expect. His obsession forces him to keep moving forward, no matter how dangerous it gets.

The shut-in is played by Andrew Garfield, the desired woman played by Riley Keough. This feels like a mix of Brick and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Unfortunately not in a good way. Can we stop having females in films be the sole reason that a character does something? It’s insulting to females and men. I might be wrong and this movie might turn at the ends, but it really feels very Incell mixed with a noir film.

Vox Lux – Releasing 12/07/18
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 90%

Taking place over the course of 18 years, the film starts on Celeste, a teen who by singing at a memorial service rises to the center stage of fame. The movie showcases the loss of innocence and tragedies that follow her career and finishes with the main character being an American Icon trying to make a comeback.

This movie would have probably been groundbreaking, if it were not for “A Star is Born”, and “Here and Now”. Unfortunately when Hollywood makes a film, usually it comes in waves. That being said the amazing Natalie Portman, and engaging Jude Law star in this film, and if anyone could take this story and shine through the amazing performance from Lady Gaga, it would be them. Additionally the unapologetic and harsh performances from Portman, are sure to make this movie stand out, if not in whole, definitely in part.
