Movies Releasing For The Week of June 28

Ophelia – Releasing 06/28/19
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 58%
Daisy Ridley takes on the role of Ophelia, as this 14th Century retelling of Hamlet, from Shakespeare, focuses on Ophelia and her journey. The tale of how a woman torn between family, allegiance to the crown, and love must decide what is the most important of all. With George MacKay as Hamlet, Clive Owen as Claudius, and Naomi Watts as Gertrude.

Personally I love Hamlet. It’s my favorite of all of the Shakespeare plays. I worry though about how our society will react to this film. There is something rotten in the state of our internet. People verbally assaulted Ridley when she played the main character in a Star Wars film, now I am sure they will throw a fit about her portrayal in a female centrist male story. That being said, even though I loved the story, and the character of Hamlet, I always felt horrible about the story of Ophelia. Even as a traditionalist of the work, I hope she has a different better end then the one in the literary work.

Killers Anonymous – Releasing 06/28/19

In the middle of a support group, multiple people sit in a circle, looking for support to help them from going back to their old vices. That vice? Murder. From killing patients, parishioners, parents, and the like, they look to one another for help. However, a murder of a political member racks the city, forcing the police on high alert, and all the criminals to be weary of their current allegiances.

Gary Oldman has one of the funiest lines in the trailer, and I recommend catching the end of the trailer for it. That being said, Jessica Alba looks from the released footage to be quite annoying in it. That is so sad, as I love her and her talents toward acting. I fell like she is wasted on a bad story/director though. That being said, if you are looking for a solid action film this weekend. This is your flick.

Three Peaks – Releasing 06/28/19

Lea, played by Bérénice Bejo, is on vacation in Italy with her boyfriend, Aaron, played by Alexander Fehling, and son Tristan. She has to manage her relationships. Her son wants her to reconcile with her ex-husband, his father. However Aaron just wants to make sure that Lea has a place for him in her life. Everything takes a turn though when Tristan disappears and who is at fault.

If you are looking for a romantic drama/suspense film, then I’d recommend this one. It’s just enough of suspense, with just the right amount of romantic tropes.

Maiden – Releasing 06/28/19
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 100%
Tracey Edwards had a dream to enter the Whitbread Round the World championship in 1989, but the world was set against her. Everyone didn’t think she could do it, and as a result, she could not gain any sponsors. She had to remortgage her house and even then could only afford a secondhand boat. But she made it to the race. Then she had to face chauvinistic press and competitors.

While Tracy and her ship, Maiden, did not place first, she did make it through the challenge, and came in 18th place. A great story does not require that the hero win, if the story and tale is about perseverance. Tracy persevered. That’s what makes the story amazing.

Yesterday – Releasing 06/28/19
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 65%
Jack Malik, played by Himesh Patel, can’t seem to catch a break. He is about to give up, when the world around him has changed. Only he knows that the world is different, and that difference is the fact that the beetles never existed. Unbeknownst to him at first, he gains fame off his covering of one of their songs. However he begins to turn into the change of fate, and begins to take credit for all their work. He made a mistake however, as while the Beetles never existed, the band members did still exist, and wrote down their works but never released them.

This seems like a light hearted film that will make a good comedy. The music within it will also be amazing. If you are a Beetles fan, or a fan of music, then I would recommend checking out this film, even if it is a little ham-fisted of a concept.
