Movies and Videos On Demand For The Week Of August 14, 2020

As we prepare for the opening of theaters and the return to normal life practices, we want to remind people that we are still within the thralls of a pandemic, and recommend people check out our article on ”If You Should Go Out” Here. Until then though, if you do go to a theater make sure it has a policy of requiring attendees to wear masks, and sit in isolated groups out of proximity of other viewers.

Big Fur – Releasing on Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 100%

Focusing on Ken Walker, this documentary focuses on his work, and specifically his creation of “Patty” an eight foot tall re-creation of Bigfoot from a 1967 shaky home movie. While covering his creation of this project and other more traditional works for the World Champion taxidermist, the Smithsonian Museum, and National Geographic Magazine, the movie gives a deep look into Ken’s life.

The movie does a good job showing how eccentric Ken Walker is, while also showing the art of taxidermy that other’s have found to be creepy or odd in modern times. While presentations of people in the craft are frustrated by representations like that of Norman Bates, Walkers presentation in this documentary gives a more sympathetic look inside his craft and life.

Two high school lovers, played by Alexandra Shipp and Nicholas Hamilton, thought they would have their lives together, when a tragic car accident breaks their bonds. However, her love isn’t just dead, he is in Limbo. Their love is so strong though that they are able to reach past the boundaries of death to find each other once more, but can she let her love go or must he remain in limbo forever.

If you are looking for a light romantic film, then this will hit the bill, and give you some emotional heart pulls. However it does cover car accidents and young death, so be prepared if this is a trigger warning for you.

A person goes missing in Whitehall, New York. Their friend Sylvia, played by Anna Shields, decides that she can’t live without knowing what happened to her friend, and heads to Whitehall, but she isn’t alone, Alex, played by Rachel Finninger, joins Sylvia, but has her own reasons for heading to this town known for it’s history of Big Foot sightings.

People are upset about the fact that this movie seems to miss the point, turing Big Foot into a simple horror trope, missing the subtly of the subplot of the film. If you are looking for something in the horror spectrum, then check this film out. If you are looking for something more about Big Foot, then I recommend checking out our earlier suggestion, Big Fur.

Spree – Releasing in Theaters and Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 64%

Kurt, played by Joe Keery, is a social media player, who wishes to be a giant under the name of @KurtsWorld96, but is stuck driving for Spree, a rideshare company. His desires to be famous pushes him to create “#TheLesson” a Cash Cab themed form of livestream entertainment, where he murders his passengers. Can a comedian, played by Sasheer Zamata, survive the ride, or will it be her last.

It’s interesting seeing lovable Joe Keery from Stranger Things fame go dark as a fame chasing serial killer. The concept is a real fear and not just a movie gimmick, though for so many women who have to worry about if their driver might have ulterior motives when they get into their Ubers. This movie has a lot of triggers in that form, but the concept is interesting, if not disturbing.

Tatiana Yurievna, played by Oksana Akinshina, finds new hope for her career, as the military takes interest in her as a result of her controversial and rule breaking methods. After being whisked away to a secret military base, Tatiana meets Konstantin Sergeyevich, played by Pyotr Fyodorov, a cosmonaut who survived a space accident with a stowaway. While the government wants to use the medical discovery as a weapon, Tatiana finds herself in trouble once again, as she tries to save Konstantin’s life.

It’s sad that some interesting films don’t get traction in the US simply because of their language barrier. While this movie isn’t the new Casablanca, the film is interesting, and unique as if a Russian on land version of Life. If you are looking for a suspenseful alien themed sci-fi film, then I recommend you check this one out!
