Movies and Videos On Demand For The Week Of April 16, 2021

As we prepare for the opening of theaters and the return to normal life practices, we want to remind people that we are still within the thralls of a pandemic, and recommend people check out our article on “If You Should Go Out” Here. Until then though, if you do go to a theater make sure it has a policy of requiring attendees to wear masks, and sit in isolated groups out of proximity of other viewers.

Hope – Releasing in Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 100%

While Anja, played by Andrea Bræin Hovig, and Tomas, played by Stellan Skarsgard, have been together for a while, they unfortunately have grown apart over the years. When Anja discovers she has terminal cancer, she leans on Tomas for support and the two reconnect and rekindle their love even though Anja’s life is coming to an end.

This reminds me of the old story of the husband who asks his wife for a divorce, but she makes him promise to carry her up the stairs for several months before she will agree to the divorce, and love is built out of the close engagement. If you are looking for a romantic story, then this will fit the need, with a little bit of sorrow for the end of the story.

Jakob’s Wife – Releasing in Theaters and Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 83%

Anne, played by Barbara Crampton, and her small-town minister husband, played by Larry Fessenden, have been falling out of love for a while. When a mysterious person, played by Bonnie Aarons, shows up, Anne finds an appetite for a life she hasn’t had. However things take a dark turn, her husband will have to fight to win his wife back before the body count gets to high.

A dark horror thriller twist to a romantic fallout story. There are a lot of romantic films coming out this week, so if you want to throw a horror theme to it, then this film will meet that need.

Monday – Releasing in Theaters and Streaming
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – 60%

While living abroad in Athens, two Americans, Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough, have a whirlwind relationship, however should they put away their future lives apart to see if they can make a future together?

Feels like a modern telling of Before Sunrise series. Romance while on vacation is always a powerful romance film setting. However if you are a fan of Sebastian Stan, and want to see him try a non-super hero genre film, them check out this movie.

The Rookies – Releasing in Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

Zhao Feng, played by Alu Wang, always loved living life to the extreme, but when he gets in over his head for the first time in his life he doesn’t know what to do. When a mysterious special agent, played by Milla Jovovich, brings him in to take on terrorists, he’ll see if he finally has what it takes.

Makes me think a lot of XXX with Kingsman mixed in. While the over the top action brings the eye candy, the story leaves a little to be desired. If you can just enjoy the ride and are looking for an action film this week, then buckle up!

Vanquish – Releasing in Theaters
Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Score – (None Available Yet)

Victoria, played by Ruby Rose, is a mother running from her past as a drug mule, but when a retired cop, played by Morgan Freeman, kidnaps her daughter to get her to work for him, Victoria must do whatever it takes to keep her safe. Victoria will have to take out groups of violent gangsters just to keep her daughter safe.

Dark, but not unheard of, story wise. However, Ruby Rose and Morgan Freeman are strong actors to place in this piece. Between the Rookies and this film, you’ll likely see more over the top action in Rookies, but if you are looking for a more dramatic action-thriller this week, then check out this film.
