Legendary Comics Tells The Story Of Elizabeth Wilkinson In Championess

Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas bring to paper the story of Elizabeth Wilkinson to the pages of Legendary Comics with the help of Amanda Perez Puentes. Elizabeth was a female bare-knuckle boxer from 18th century London. The actual Elizabeth might have been one of the first female prizefighter in history, having advertised her challenge to Hannah Hyfield in a London newspaper. Her prowess, and desire to fight with a top on, which was not common for the era caused her to be viewed as a serious athlete, and as such earned her the title of “the Championess of England!”

The story from Legendary takes some liberties, changing Elizabeth to a half-Indian woman struggling to cover her sister’s debts forced to turn to her passion of bareknuckle boxing with the help of historically famous James Figg as her trainer and promoter, a true fact from history.

The graphic novel is also being adapted into a UK based television series. If you don’t want to wait for the series, you can read the graphic novel when it releases on April 13, 2021. You can pre-order the graphic novel Here!
