Joseph Gordon Levitt Addresses Backlash from HitRecord/Ubisoft Partnership

Today, beloved actor, director, producer, and all-around good guy Joseph Gordon Levitt responded to the tough criticism that he and his company, HitRecord, have been receiving over the last few days.

Since the announcement at E3 on Monday that HitRecord and Ubisoft would be creating a partnership to allow fans from all over the world to collaborate on the art and music for the hit game series Beyond Good and Evil 2, Levitt has been reading a ton of harsh feedback on the decision. The most prevalent complaint is the concern that this will all be spec work and not paid labor.

Spec work, for those not in the know, is any work performed by someone where the client only pays once the project is finished and approved. This usually ends up with the artist having spent a ton of time and energy on something only to have it scrapped as unusable.

Levitt claims that all work done through HitRecord is compensated fairly. Any contributors, down to those who only influence the outcome, have the monetary gain from the project split among them, and is then submitted for the community to review before payout is sent. This could result in either a very high payout or a very low payout, depending on a number of factors, including amount of participants and how much the project ended up earning.
