Aaron Phillips Guest Reviews Netflix’s Night Teeth

It’s spooky season and viewers are gorging themselves on Halloween movie content like a hungry child plowing their bag of treats. From the classics, to originals, there are so many fantastic choices. So when it comes to the Netflix original movie ‘Night Teeth’ let me give you my thoughts on whether this selection should make your must watch list.

Night Teeth’ is directed by Adam Randall, and features quite a cast from Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Benny), Debby Ryan (Blaire), Lucy Fry (Zoe), and Raúl Castillo (Jay). Then surprisingly including the likes of Alfie Allen (Victor), Megan Fox (Grace) and Alexander Ludwig (Rocko). The film is available right now, exclusively on Netflix.

The films premise is all based around the existence of Vampires (shocker I know) in the L.A. region, as they seek to honor a treaty held between them and a group of hunters. The treaty details out what territory the Vampires are confined to, and how they’re allowed to feed. Since the inception of the treaty however, the creatures of the night have risen to power within their territory and have gained control of the region. Now a mid tier boss who demands more will destroy this pact as he goes against the Vampire hierarchy, and the Hunters.

It all sounds quite serious, and dark, but the catch of the entire plot is that an innocent, and naive young guy called Benny gets caught deep in the middle of the entire conflict. He unwittingly chauffeurs two beautiful Vampire Lieutenants around the city as they enact their murderous plans.

Look I’ll be honest, as far as Vampire films go this doesn’t meet the standard to be considered amongst the elite. The violence is quite tame, and while there’s blood sucking, death, and fighting, at no point does this translate to feeling like there’s a real threat.

While this movie was quite restrained, I actually still really enjoyed it. It has a very modern, neon, electronica vibe for the cinematography that results in a lot of bright, energetic shots, and sounds. The camera work was also extremely pleasing as the crew finds engaging ways of presenting different scenes and scenarios throughout the film.

The pace does tend to lag in parts in favor of dialogue to support character relationships, and parts of the early foreshadowing of the story do feel overly predictable come the conclusion of the film.

With that being said, the world building that’s introduced with various groups roaming the city lays the groundwork for some interesting potential for expansion. A lot of this was helped by the performance of the characters, and although it wasn’t particularly mind blowing, I still found myself enjoying it for what it was.

Lendeborg, and Ryan had some entertaining chemistry, with Fry sprinkling in her own unique unhinged chaotic tones. The cameos were quite a shock, and while brief, they do leverage some fantastic scenes that adds to the overall film. One aspect I loved from the film was having the Hunters represented by a group of Latinx characters, being led by Castillo.

I want more from the character of Jay and Benny. The lore that’s introduced begs for more exploration, and I hope this leads to a spin off or a sequel. I actually think this would make for a great Netflix series!

‘Night Teeth’ is a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously as a Vampire film, and that honestly really helps it succeed. It’s certainly not without its problems, but if you go in just wanting to be entertained, there’s definitely something in this for you. Ultimately it’s a Netflix film, but if you’re stuck looking for a popcorn flick this isn’t a bad choice. Overall, a 7/10 from me.

‘Night Teeth’ is available right now, exclusively on Netflix.
