What You Need To Know About Carnage Before Venom: Let There Be Carnage Comes Out

Created by writer David Michelinie and artist Mark Bagley (See fact below on this…), Carnage is a symbiote and offspring of the Marvel comics villain (or anti-hero) Venom. His first appearance was in 1992 in a Spider-Man comic book. Symbiotes specifically are generally more powerful than their parent symbiote, and generally, symbiotes’ personality is affected mainly by the first person they bond with. The first person Carnage bonded with was Cletus Kasady, a serial killer.

While Carnage has been a major player of the symbiotes in Marvel Comics and has been in numerous video games, this movie, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, will be the first cinematic appearance of the creature.

A lot of people who enjoy darker stories have fallen in love with the chaos and crazy nature of the red menace. So for those people here are a shortlist of interesting facts:

Fun facts about Carnage:

  • While he was created in 1992 by the artist Mark Bagley, the first depiction of the villain was penciled by Chris Marrinan.
  • The original host is usually the most well known, but Carnage has also bonded with Norman Osborn, and even Parker’s clone Ben Reilly.
  • Now onto the comics stuff. Here are some pivotal comic books that will give you the general idea of Carnage’s style and character to prepare you for the character in the new film!

    The Amazing Spider-Man #361

While his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #359 was his first appearance, it was mainly a cameo. His later appearance in this comic book would be considered his “full” debut. While the character is sadistic and violent, the comic book did a good job using the fixed panel perspective to hide most of the most horrifying things the character does. This is going to be very hard for them to accomplish in the current film, which makes the PG-13 rating so confusing. In this comic book, Peter hears of the killing of a friend of his, and thinks it was Venom, but an investigation leads him to a fight that he can barely survive against Carnage.
    Spider-Man Unlimited #1

After having his symbiote supposedly destryoed by a sonic weapon, Cletus Kasady was locked away in Ravencroft Institute. However to survive the attack, Carange merged with Kasady’s blood. Upon cutting his flesh with cuffs, he released the symbiote again, and slaughtered his way out of prison. After teaming up he laid siege upon New York in the Maximum Carnage comic book event.
    Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man #13

Having lost his symbiote, with only remnants inside himself, Cletus uses the little power it grants him to escape from prison and is called by the essence of Carnage to a portal leading to the Negative Zone, taking Spider-Man along for the ride. Once there it starts the story of Kasady making a deal with a devil to regain his full power and return to Carnage!

So who here is going to be running to theaters to watch this movie? My only wish is that it was R-rated, because I can’t imagine Carnage as PG-13.
