Live Long and Prosper with Star Trek Comic Recs

Set phasers to stun. With Star Trek: Picard series coming out tomorrow, let’s celebrate one of the most famous space captains of all time. Someone who has boldly gone where no man has gone before! That’s right, none other than Picard!

A very, very short history…

Jean-Luc Picard was a celebrated Starfleet officer, archaeologist and diplomat who served throughout much of the 24th century. The highlights of his career were centered around assignments as commanding officer of the Federation starships USS Stargazer, USS Enterprise-D, and the USS Enterprise-E. In these roles, Picard not only witnessed major turning points of recent galactic history, but played a key role in them also, from making first contact as captain of the Federation’s flagship with no fewer than 27 alien species, including the Ferengi and the Borg.

With the first Star Trek coming out in 1966, there has been so many years generations of stories and fans. And even so, the story continues!

Besides all the movies, books, tv series, and products, there are also a lot of comics. And since this is the Comic Round-Up, let’s check out my very bias favorite Star Trek comics. Are you ready? Because resistance is futile!

ONCE A HERO

Star Trek #19

In this heartfelt issue, Captain Kirk tried to come to grips with the death of one of the security officers on the Enterprise. Much has been said over the years about the anonymous “red shirts” who die while working as security officers on the Enterprise. David, then, chose to have that very anonymity called into question. What do you do with the death of someone who died to protect you but you know nothing about them? What kind of strange debt do you owe someone like that? Kirk is plagued by these thoughts when he realizes that no one else on the ship knew Ensign Lee, either. Kirk, though, very thoughtfully managed to find some sense of peace in Lee’s passing, in what what David’s final issue as the regular writer of the “Star Trek” ongoing series.

STAR TREK: WAYPOINT

Spanning every single timeline and iteration of the Trek canon, each issue of Waypoint presents an array of bite-sized short stories in comic book form. Most recently, this means we got to see Janeway and Tuvok serving together on the U.S.S. Billings way before the events of Voyager. The first issue in 2016 also had a time travel story all about Captain Archer’s dog, Porthos from Enterprise. (Yes, Waypoint is also the first time there have been NX-01 Enterprise comic book stories.) Packed with different artistic styles and with a focus on smaller, heartwarming stories, there’s always something in each of these issues for each kind of fan.

Each issue self-contained, the stories themselves within those issues are also self-contained.

STARFLEET ACADEMY

A bold new chapter for STAR TREK begins here, in an all-new series that shows you what life is like for cadets at the galaxy’s greatest school! Witness the student days of the iconic cast before they joined the Enterprise, immediately before the blockbuster 2009 film! Plus, meet an all-new group of students as they embark on bold new adventures of their own!

Well, this concludes my top comic recommendations, I’ve giv’n her all she’s got captain, an’ I canna give her no more. What do you think of this list? Who are your favorite characters? Star Wars or Star Trek? Will you be watching the new series? Let us know in the comments and I’ll catch you next time, same nerd time, name nerd channel.
