iPod Day! Music Pairings to Comics

Music has power. It can change our mood, make us feel more confident, even get us through some tough times. When the iPod originally came out in 2001, I was lucky enough to get one a few years later for “free” with a purchase of my very first Apple laptop for my entrance into art school. Goodbye CD’s! This device changed what we listen to, and how we listen to music. At the time it was considered “groundbreaking” technology and so, today is “National iPod Day! Observed annually on October 23rd, which is the day it was introduced by Steve Jobs, co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc.

Today, the iPods are our phones, and people still by vinyl records. So, a lot has changed, and a lot has stayed the same. But one thing is for sure, now with a click of a button, we can instantly download, purchase, and/or stream any kind of music we want for any mood we want.

I know what you are wondering, how does this tie in with Comic Round-Up. Well, knowing that music is a big part of our identity and mood, I will share with you the three comics series I just caught up on, and I will pair them with music. Kind of wine and cheese, or wine and chocolate, or wine and steak, or… wine and wine. I’m sure there are a lot of other combos out there that dont involve wine, but you get what I’m saying.

So without further or due, here are the three comic series I just caught up with, a short review, and my very bias suggested music album pairing to them.

THE BOYS – Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson

Well, first and foremost, it was great enough to get its own amazing TV series on Amazon Prime and this marks the second comic series Ennis has been involved in and got a TV series (Preacher). This is a 12 volume commitment and the similarities between the show and the comic, you could probably count on one hand. In a good way, the show does have some slight nods to the comic series that a reader of the series would appreciate, but it is quite a different path. I’m sure people could argue with this thought, but even though the comic and the series are so different, I like it. I like it because it gives me a slightly alternate universe that I can get a different “what if” story with. I mean, think about how many Batman and Spider-Man origin stories there are, just think of it as a slightly different origin or a reboot. The comic goes way deeper and more spread out for each character and their backstory. I loved every volume and especially volume 11 where there was such a huge twist, HUGE! I can’t wait to see how they might incorporate this twist in the TV series if it gets that far.

MOONSTRUCK – Grace Ellis and Shae Beagle

I recommended “Moonstruck” a few months ago about the day plus my top LGBTQ+ comic recommendations in THIS post. Well, I finally got to read both available volumes. Let me start off by saying that this is an all ages comic. So from my thinking, things can only get so deep or so involved. Starting with the illustration, it’s amazing. So into world, the colors, the character designs, the flow. Awesome! As for the story, I really wish it would get deeper into the cores of each character and the storylines are pretty light. BUT there is an dark overarching storyline throughout that feels like an amazing mystery is about to happen! Like I said, it’s an all ages comic. I wish there were maybe some more “adult” backstory or sidestory issues that I could read, but that being said, I will still continue this series.

BLACKSAD – Juan Diaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido

JUST WOW! Have you heard of this comic before? When I did the video interview with Steven E. Gordon at LA Comic Con (which you can watch HERE), off screen, we talked about comics and he recommend this series to me. LOVE IT! Adult noir style series with anthropomorphic animals in which each volume takes you on a journey of a mystery to unfold. The illustrations looks realistic with a dark cinematic style, the story equally as engaging. As a side note, the series will have a Steam game coming out for PS4, Switch, XBox One, and Steam (Windows and Mac), and you best believe I’m getting it!
