CONNER’S CRITIQUES: Umbrella Academy Season One

Hello and welcome to Conner’s Critiques. My name is Conner Sharp and I’m very excited to talk about this show. Hell I’m always excited to talk to you guys. This time though, I’ll be your shelter in this rainy season of television, as I protect you from the rain of constantly new episodes and shows. Some might even call me an…. awning… Kidding. I’m talking The Umbrella Academy.

So put on your monocle, set your robot nanny/mom on sleep mode, shoo off the chimp butler, and sit down to enjoy our review of The Umbrella Academy.

STORY: 8/10
In a world where a super hero story/movie is released every month, *Cough Cough* The Adventures of June Bug *Cough Cough*, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of boring, or over played stories and concepts. This is not the case with The Umbrella Academy. While the idea of time travel, secret organizations, super heroes, and the anti-hero are all not new concepts, the show doesn’t care about all that junk. While it uses them, they are more of a backdrop for the real story.

This isn’t the story of heroes saving the day, this is the story of family, love, and how flawed we all are, within the backdrop of a super hero world. The characters are saving the world, or not, and they keep forgetting to save it, because they are to busy saving each other.

Additionally, the way they blend a unique stylized super hero world, while hitting the scenes with poyent and powerful music that conveys the scene, and the emotions of the characters. As I am writing this review, I am literally listening to the soundtrack.

It is so good.

ACTING: 9/10
Every character is flawed, even the best of them make mistakes and ruins the day at some point. If you watch the show, you can actually see how each person has caused the apocalypse to occur, or caused the group to fail to solve it, to some degree. Nothing is ever to far out of reach though. The focus is that at the end of the day, no matter what we do, family is still family.

It’s heartbreaking, and uplifting all at the same time.

Sometimes a character can be hard to watch, and see them make their mistakes. For Monica Scott, our fellow writer, it was seeing Vanya pour salt in her coffee. That being said, it’s a journey that makes every step of the way engaging and solid.

OVERALL: 9/10
In the end I wanted more. While this is only a ten episode season, I will say that it does not suffer the problem of having any fat that could be trimmed. Every episode is a path on the journey of this show. Every episode will hook you and pull you in. Be prepared to binge this one.

I am glad to some degree that this was only ten episodes, but also sad that it is. It just makes me thirsty for more of the show, and eager to see where season two will take it. That is unless Netflix makes the mistake of cancelling this show too.
