Conner’s Critique: Transformers: War for Cybertron: Kingdom

We are huge fans of Transformers. I saw the cartoon as a child, grew up with the movies, and my final step from the animated series was Beast Wars, which was a deviation in art style and story taking place simultaneously in the past and future of the Transformers lore. Now War for Cybertron crashes into that world and we got the chance to see it early to share it with you.

Like normal, this critique will be based on three categories: Story, Acting, and Overall. So let’s begin.

STORY: 8/10

Playing into the golden disc, the all-spark which was given its canon introduction in Beast Wars was a nice choice. A lot of people don’t know the history of ever-changing Transformer McGuffins in the series, but the most known item that has transcended the franchise was only created in 1996, and only really fully incorporated in the live-action Transformer movie.

The conclusion of all the threads of Beast Wars, and the butting heads of the future and the past creates a unique way to add conflict and resolution to a lot of the character’s stories, and to give depth to the choices people make, and how they will be viewed hundreds of years in the future.

What Optimus Prime attempted to do, and what people view his actions were are not always going to be the same, and the characters working through that was a nice touch.

ACTING: 7/10
The voice acting is nice, but I’ll be honest hearing my much loved Beast Wars characters against the Transformers. Something felt off and confusing. Then I found out none of the Beast Wars actors were brought back to reprise their characters. That was upsetting because if you were going to do that, you might as well go get the OG voices.

That aside, I really did enjoy the performances of the characters once I got through the awkwardness. They delivered depth and character into the animated metal bodies.

OVERALL: 7.5/10
Overall this was quite a blast from my past and felt awesome to return to the characters that I loved as a kid returned to a larger story. If you loved Beast Wars, and want to learn more about the story and see a strong conclusion to the War on Cybertron trilogy, then go check out the new show!

Conner’s Final Thought(s):
I will admit that I had not seen any of the War for Cybertron series in the past, having jumped directly into this chapter of the story, and while that might frustrate you Transformer fans, as an old fan of Beast Wars, let me tell you that it’s not exactly a bad thing. If you watched Beast Wars, then you know the story that the characters are crashing into and can enjoy it from the other side of the story, learning the lore as you travel through it.

It’s a great entry point into the series that will make you want to watch the earlier series.
