Conner’s Critique: Palm Springs

We waited to make this critique, primarily because of the fact that this awesome movie is very interesting, and wanted people to find it on their own. However, now that time has passed, and the show has had it’s time, now it’s time to critique it! If you haven’t seen this film yet, fair warning there will be Spoilers ahead.

As always we break down the critiques of the three categories: Story, Acting, and Overall.

STORY: 6/10
It’s hard to give this story a low rating, but the rating I gave it is unfortunately what it deserves. I really enjoyed this film, and it’s important I say that first. This movie was a fun, and interesting take on the Groundhog Day, time loop story. Starting off the movie already in the time loop, allowed the audience to learn about the loop at the same time as the secondary main character Sarah really allows the viewers to be able to feel like they too are stuck in the loop.

The dynamic of the story though doesn’t focus so much on story building, as it focuses on jokes, and leaning into dealing with the effects of being in a time loop, and eventually losing interest in life, until you finally break free of the loop.

ACTING: 6/10
I want to start off by explaining that the low rating on acting is not specifically because the movie is bad, or that the acting is bad, it’s just that the characters aren’t primarily presenting in an impressive way. The supporting characters are cardboard and flat. While we love Andy Sandberg, he just didn’t really stand out as… well anyone but Andy Sandberg. That’s not a criticism though, we like Andy, but it’s just not going to earn you any points here.

Cristin Milioti, who plays Sarah, is the largest shining star, showcasing a strong female in the movie, who takes advantage of the situation to amazingly better herself and solve her problem. This strong position makes her stand out as a unique party to this interesting comedy film.

I was saddened by what I considered a waste of J.K. Simmons and his talent. While he has one of the most profound moments in the film, talking about acceptance of his fate, the character’s general unlikeability how he was written, and how he was performed unfortunately didn’t allow the heartfelt moment to stand on its own.

OVERALL: 6/10
Not the best movie, we won’t lie, but it’s really enjoyable, and if you want something in the world that feels like being in a time loop yourself as you are locked inside your home from this pandemic. If you are looking for an escape, then lean into this film for an hour plus.

Conner’s Final Thought(s):
If you like this film, then we highly recommend that you check out Russian Doll, as it was another dark look at the time loop story, and is a highly sarcastic, and enjoyable journey. Russian Doll is a tv series though, so you do have more time with the characters then you do in this one-off film.
