Conner’s Critique: History of Swear Words

Since the days of George Carlin and Richard Pryor a lot of taboo words have become less so. With the public opinion always changing, and South Park’s “Shit” episode, it’s hard to know what’s appropriate and what isn’t when it comes to swears. For this reason Netflix brought it’s show “History of Swear Words” to life. So now we are going write some words, talking about the show… talking about words. Lets fucking get into it!

Like normal, this critique will be based on three categories: Story, Acting, and Overall. So let’s begin.

STORY: 8/10
The history of swear words are sometimes easy to predict, or sometimes crazy to follow through history. The story of each is given an episode, with social commentary to that history, and modern day view of it’s usage applied as the history is broken down.

If you’ve always wondered where the word you use so much came from, this show does a great job providing that road map, while also being entertaining.

ACTING: 9/10
Normally on series like this, you can’t really provide a breakdown covering acting. It’s an issue because the talent is simply sitting talking about history, and are just experts or people sharing their opinion.

Here it’s a bit different. For one the host, Nicholas Cage is always on in his performance. He was chosen for this role clearly because of his persona and well… “Cage-like” energy. He does an amazing job, and frankly the only person I think who would have been better cast in this role is Samuel L. Jackson.

OVERALL: 8/10
I loved that they had a mix of experts, an introduction from Cage, and comedians in the series. Comedians may seem like an interesting person to talk about societal issues, but to be honest, their inclusion makes so much sense. Comedians provide most of their craft in the form of words, and how they are spoken. They have a deep understanding of ways in which you can say things, that normally you wouldn’t be able to.

Who better to talk about the ever changing way swear words have been used over prior and current times.

Conner’s Final Thought(s):
If you are looking for a solid, funny, and historical show to entertain you, and take your mind off the messed up world, then fucking-a you got a bitchen show to watch the crap out of, you little shit!
