Conner’s Critique: Crime Scene: The Vanishing At Cecil Hotel

I fell into a rabbit hole. The new series on Netflix Crime Scene starts off talking about the case of Elisa Lam in the Vanishing at Cecil Hotel. I remember when the event happened all those years ago. Now this show talks about the history of the Cecil Hotel, the entirety of the case, and the effects it had upon a following of people who closely followed the events online.

Like normal, this critique will be based on three categories: Story, Acting, and Overall. So let’s begin.

STORY: 5/10
This is a crime series, it tells the story of the vanishing of Elisa Lam, but unfortunately, the format of the series does the same thing it tries to warn about in the end. In sensationalizing the story to produce a multi-episode special, they accomplished the same situation that caused the obsession and online sleuth actions that almost led to the suicide of person as a result.

That being said, it is a fun obsession to fall into, and the series ends with the realization of truth that hopefully will jar you out of the world, but it can’t be ignored that their actions are almost hypocritical.

ACTING: 7/10
We can’t really qualify the series by it’s acting. All we can say is that the presentation and choice of the people discussing the series is impressive, and the person they got to voice Elisa Lam, Artemis Snow, is a voice over actor, does a great job. Artemis Snow is a voice over actress, and her presentation of Elisa Lam, and her troubles, her inspirations, and her aspirations are well presented.

We can’t forget that for her family and friends, this isn’t some fun story though. This is their life. If you are in need of mental health, or are taking medication, it’s important to ask for help if you need it. If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask, and you can seek help at this number: 1-877-SAMHSA7 (1-877-726-4727).

OVERALL: 6/10
The series does a great job at unnerving you as you are watching it. The cuts, formats, and design for storytelling is done for the purposes of that end. If you are sensitive to those types of stories and unnerving feelings, then I recommend you not watch this series in the dark, or close to bed at night.

Conner’s Final Thought(s):
This series pairs very well with a rewatch of American Horror Story Hotel, which is a very underrated season of the series. Good news is that both this series, and this season of American Horror Story is on Netflix at this time. Just remember how much you get into the series that this event took place in reality, and Elisa Lam was a real person, with a real family. There is loss in this world, and we shouldn’t overlook the toll it takes on people.
