Conner’s Critique: Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House Of Fun Season 1

We were looking for an interesting comedy special or series to watch, and we fell into the Netflix series, Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House Of Fun. What a show for so many reasons. This is going to be a hard review, because the series isn’t a traditional feature. That being said, we can’t wait to talk about it with you.

Like normal, this critique will be based on three categories: Story, Acting, and Overall. So let’s begin.

STORY: 7/10
Usually sketch comedy series don’t really have long running stories. So this makes it hard to judge it in this series. That being said, there is a way in which I can judge this… The sketches as they are written are funny, interesting, and unique. I don’t really feel like anything is lifted from something else, or parroting on another comedy style.

Additionally, the series does an amazing job keeping specific running jokes in the background. Things like poster ripping, creaky cabinets, and even some characters escape the bounds of their original episodes to give a feeling of growth through the short series of only six episodes. It has a fun feeling, but it’s not too strong to be required to enjoy the series.

ACTING: 9/10
The boys of the series, Mark Samual Bonanno, Broden Kelly, and Zachary Ruane, may seem to only be making stupid sketches with no real style, but if you watch their body work, emotional representation, and character style you can tell obviously there is a lot of skill in each of them.

There is a lot of people who think that comedy is hard, drama is easy. While their comedy is off the wall, and insane, they do a great job of making it the jokes fun and engaging.

Additionally the series has tons of guest stars in the series. Tons! Kristen Schaal, Ed Helms (sorry Egg Helms), “Weird Al” Yankovic, Paul F. Tompkins, and even Aussie Homelander Antony Starr!

OVERALL: 3 or 8/10
This series reminds me a lot of the comedy styling of the Shane Dundas and David Collins who perform under the name The Umbilical Brothers. While the Umbilical Brothers are an Australian comedy duo focusing on the art of the American styled mime craft. However the crew of Aunty Donna’s is a combination of American and Australian actors who instead of mime and force prospective acts, use set design, and character acting to present a unique and fun comedy style.

Conner’s Final Thought(s):
I warn you, the comedy styling of this series is very obscure, hence the obscure overall score for the series. If you like that type of humor, then you owe it to yourself to watch this series, and the series deserves and overall 8/10 rating. If you are not a fan of dry obscure humor, then the series is a 3/10 rating, enjoyable, but might push and grate on you.
