Monica Bleue: A Werewolf Story – Comic Book Review

What’s up everyone? It’s your girl Megan, coming right back at you with another comic book review! I am so excited to be reviewing another series co-created by none other than the famous legend of horror films John Carpenter and his partner in crime Sandy King. This comic is different than the last one I reviewed (if you haven’t read it, check it out Here!) but just by looking at the cover art, done by Damien Worm who is also the artist, I was already impressed and knew that I was going to be in for a scary treat. I don’t personally read too many supernatural stories focusing on werewolves but I really wanted to give this a shot! The issue that we got a chance to review was #4 out of 5 and was released on April 8th, 2020.

The story focuses on Monica Bleue, the title character who looks to be between 15-18 years old. She’s a redhead with a cute nose piercing and a badass attitude (already won me over). Her super strength and hyper sense of smell gives her the powers of detection to scope out a mysterious figure she is following. Accompanying her is her dad, who looks like everyone’s dad. He’s protective of her but is letting her take the lead and charge in this mission.

Monica follows the stranger until they both happen on a dead-end alley. And all of a sudden, we got ourselves a kickass fight between two fierce and ferocious werewolves! There’s no full moon out but there’s snarling and punches thrown at each other. I will say, I appreciate that they let Monica fight the hardest she can, while still showing some of her weaknesses because she still is young and inexperienced in this new journey shes em”barked” (I had to slip a pun in there haha) She doesn’t want to stop fighting and she won’t give up. Its revenge she wants from this creature, but why? *cue twilight zone theme*

You gotta read the rest to find out how this story unfolds!

Now let’s talk about art. The colors are vibrant and feel realistic. Each character has their own distinct features that help them stand out. Its well drawn and executed. And of course, the horror elements are a true work of art! The werewolves don’t look gimmicky or boring. The teeth are shark-like, with the spit looking sinewy and for lack of a better word, gross. The fingernails look like actual claws that could slice through steel. Damien Worm drew these characters to look more beast-like as opposed to the typical canine look most associated with werewolves. My favorite feature though? The eyes! Glowy and ominous, I would never want those staring into my soul.

I truly enjoyed reading this supernatural thriller! It’s not your average superhero comic, its unique and a horrific breath of fresh air. I recommend this story to readers aged 13 and up. If you are just as much of a horror fan as I am, you’re going to want to pick up a copy, and you can pre-order the paperback Here!
