Storm King’s Hyperbreed #4 – Comic Book Review

Hey, Readers! Welcome back to our reviews of the Hyperbreed comic from the great folks over at Storm King! We were provided with review copies of the first five issues. New to the series? Wanna get on board? Check out my previous reviews here, Here and Here.

So, when last we left our crew of Byyr, Cammo, Fext, and their new little buddy, Boomer, they had traveled into a Mak base to liberate a large quantity of Yik Void – a substance that will clear their freighter of the crystalline substance that’s crippling it. The Mak counter-attacked, but they were able to escape by the skin of their very sharp teeth by usurping an ancient (Vintage, as Byyr will assert.) ship that’s been accumulated into the base.

Basic Synopsis

With the Mak in hot pursuit, our furry friends (Well. Cammo and Boomer are less fuzzy, but let’s go with it.) manage to coax the ancient ship into Space Fold, ditching the Mak and making it back to their freighter.

The ship they’re trying to reclaim, however, is more gooped up with crystals than when they left. The stuff is self-replicating and grows better in environments with an atmosphere than it does in the vacuum of space, meaning that what was supposed to be an easy trip into the cargo hold is blocked.

They discover that they can make a longer but more manageable trip in through the bridge, so opt for that. It’s a timed and tense operation as the environment suits they’re wearing are ancient, ill-fitting (Boomer looks hilarious in his way over-sized suit.) and low on air, but they manage to get a large portion of it cleared. The Yik Void is a several part process, first liquefying crystals, then turning it into foam, and then jettisoning it out into space. There’s just a LOT of it to be cleared. This gives Cammo and Fext a chance to discuss their recent betrayal at the hands of the Corporation that owns them and why, oh why, they might have been the targets of such a vicious double-cross.

They find out in short order, but if you want to know, you’re gonna need to pick up the issue!

My take

This issue has, primarily, only a couple of locations and so the art isn’t quite as varied as issues 2 and 3. But it’s a story-heavy issue and does a lot more world-building, character interaction and towards the end, we get some new characters to look at. (One of which is just… horrific. In the best way possible. And also has a clever, punny name and I swear if there are ever action figures for this series I’m buying ’em.)

The character interactions are where this series really shines, and this issue is no different. Boomer, finding his footing with his new crew, doing his best to be helpful is great. And Byyr demonstrating his capacity for patience, keeping his temper in check, while working together with Boomer is nice. Cammo and Fext have a long conversation and theorize about why they’re being targeted and it shows that they both have calm analytical minds but its clear Cammo has been pondering on this since the start and already has some pretty good ideas as to why things are the way they are.

In short, I’m very excited to see where #5 goes. You can purchase the paperback Here!
