Vortex 2.0 Issue #2 – Comic Book Review

Hey spooky babes and boos! Welcome back to another comic review by the one and only Nerd News Social. I am back and ready to give you all my thoughts on the second issue of Vortex 2.0. If you missed my first issue review, you can find it Here! This comic is intended for mature audiences. Sorry kids, don’t want you more spooked than you already will be!

Before we dive back in and pick up where we left off, I had mentioned in my first review that I thought the artwork was amazing and stunning! My opinion has not changed since and I am so impressed with the consistency in the color story and fine details presented. I will advise that there are some scary images that are pretty gruesome, so if you are sensitive to that keep that in mind before you read. Tim Bradsheet does awesome cover art that sends chills down your spine before even opening the comic. The second issue cover has an astronaut with a red-tinted helmet on and if you look very closely, you’ll see a skull-shaped face staring out of it. I also see tentacle shapes surrounding the head and it looks like your worst nightmare! I love how he incorporates elements of the story and without spoiling it is able to reveal clues and details that will help the reader better comprehend the chilling tale. Also, I still can’t get that first issue cover image and the sinister demon-looking grandma out of my head that concluded the previous story…..

Picking up from where we last left off, Jake Dixon is currently being held in a holding cell accused of murdering Dr. Masul Gamad, who we later find out was Faye Munron’s fiancée. She finds him lying in a pool of his own blood, with Dixon crouching over him. If he didn’t do it, then who or what did….? A fellow female cellmate named Dusty warns him that his outbursts were no good here and that “they will come and get you when they are good and ready”. Meanwhile, a familiar face appears and it’s none other than Anna Cheron, the pilot he spoke of in the first issue! With the forced assistance from Daniel, a crew member who isn’t necessarily the brightest bulb in the lamp, she is reunited with Dixon and helps him escape. Dusty persuades them to let her join in and Anna reluctantly agrees. Before officially taking off in a stolen police craft, Dixon goes back and leaves a message to Daniel to pass along to Munron. Unfortunately, Daniel doesn’t last long as we see him torn to pieces when he is discovered later on. Man, Dixon really is in the wrong place and always at the wrong time!

As I read this series, I found that there is some inspiration from other movies/comics I have seen. The Thing, a 1982 horror sci-fi film directed by our very own John Carpenter, shows how a parasitic life form assimilates itself to a living host. In this story, humans inject this life-form into themselves for the supposed “healing” properties it carries…..but does it actually? The scientists conducting these brutal experiments note that the parasite comes out of the human body in the form of tentacle-like shapes but do not assimilate or mutate to the human host, and only reacts to exposure. Definitely, something to ponder!

Intrigued and want to finish the rest? Get your copy Here! I wonder what will come next as we go further down the black hole together, and try to figure out just what in the hell this parasite really is! Join me next time as I review the terrifying third issue of Vortex 2.0.

Stay spooky!
